Despre cinstirea icoanelor

Creştinii cinstesc sfintele icoane pentru că ei au experiat lucrarea lui Dumnezeu prin acestea, au simţit că le sunt împlinite rugăciunile mai uşor atunci când solicită ajutorul sfinţilor rugându-se înaintea icoanelor acestora. Sfinţenia icoanelor provine din legătura dintre chipul reprezentat şi persoana pictată, precum şi din slujba specială care se oficiază pentru consacrarea icoanelor.

Cinstirea unei icoane nu se adresează materiei sau culorilor folosite, ci sfântului reprodus în acea imagine, învăţătură care deosebeşte icoana de idol şi care este subliniată şi în rugăciunea de sfinţire: „Am pus această icoană cu cinste înaintea slavei tale, nu îndumnezeind-o, ci ştiind că cinstea icoanei se suie la cel zugrăvit pe ea“... more

Lighting Candles

Lighting candles is an important part of Orthodox worship. We light them as we pray, making an offering to accompany our prayers. Orthodox typically light candles when coming into the church - and that is usually the best time to light them, but there are times when candles should not be lit. It is not proper to light candles during the Epistle or Gospel readings, during the Little or Great Entrances, the sermon, and most of the times when the faithful are standing. If you find yourself arriving to church after the Liturgy has begun, a good rule of thumb to remember is - if everyone is standing, wait until they are sitting to light a candle (unless they are sitting for the sermon, of course).
